Introduction to Monopoli, Italy
The commercial port city of Monopoli lies on Italy's Adriatic coastline in Bari Province, some 65kms from Brindisi and 40kms to the southeast of Bari. Set on the 'heel' of the country, the city has an economy based on agriculture, industry and tourism. Founded as a small village during the Hellenistic era, the expanded town was conquered by the Byzantines, the Normans and later by Spain, and was a base for ships carrying knights and pilgrims to the Holy Land during the Crusades. Visitors are attracted to the beautiful countryside and coastline surrounding the city as well as the medieval castles and fine churches within its borders. Several Monopoli hotels are set close to the harbour and its two ancient castles, one located on a promontory close to the Old City and the second now a Benedictine monastery. The towering cathedral, the 18th century Palazzo Palmieri and the 14th century Jerusalem Hospital, founded by the Knights Hospitallers, are all reminders of the city's long heritage. The nearby protected area of outstanding natural beauty at the summit of Mount Saint Nicholas is home to a fine selection of flora. other spellings: monopolihotels, monopori otel, mnopoli hotell, moopoli hote, monpoli hotes, monooli
