Introduction to Milan - Porta Vittoria
Porta Vittoria is a vibrant shopping district, around one kilometre east of Milan city centre. As the name suggests, it was formerly home to a city gate, which was demolished in the 1800s. Nowadays, the district centres on Five Days Square (Piazza Cinque Giornate), symbolised by Grandi’s obelisk, which lies on the site of the former gate. Most of the district’s main roads converge on the square, which is also home to a tram stop. Much of the square is lined by large retail outlets, as are two of the main roads leading from it, Corso 22 Marzo and Corso Porta Vittoria. Porta Vittoria hotels offer easy access to the City of the Studies (Citta Studi), a neighbouring district that is home to many of the city’s biggest universities. Although most of the city’s attractions can be found in the historic centre, there is one ornate church just 350m from the main square, Chiesa di Santa Maria della Passione.Visit our Milan Travel Guide
