Introduction to Milan - Bovisa
More than a century ago, the Milan district of Bovisa was a rural farming region. After this community whose name means 'oxen' in English was incorporated into the larger city in 1873, it became an industrial neighbourhood filled with factories. The district then became primarily a residential suburb during the 1950s. Today, it is undergoing yet another transformation as one of the city's up-and-coming art neighbourhoods. The now abandoned factories and warehouses are filled with street art and a branch of the Triennale modern design and art museum opened here in 2006. Yet another early 20th century factory now houses the Politecnico di Milano university's architecture, design and engineering schools. Large abandoned cast metal pieces have been sculpted and painted in bright colours around the university campus. Many Bovisa hotels are extended-stay apartments that are popular among students and businesspeople staying in the city for long periods. A large rail station and several tram networks quickly transport visitors to Milan city centre, six kilometres to the south.Visit our Milan Travel Guide
