Introduction to Matera - City Centre
The unusually pretty town of Matera is the capital of the region of the same name. In the town itself, prepare to be wowed by an incredible juxtaposition of what looks like an avalanche of buildings in a mix of granite and sable colours teetering above a pair of steep-sided ravines. The town alone would probably offer most visitors a sufficiently impressive visual feast. The UNESCO World Heritage site that is its greatest attraction, however, makes this town somewhere well worth visiting. Hotels in Matera City Centre make it easy to potter about town on foot. The Old City is packed with amazing architecture but next door is the feature attraction, Sassi di Matera. These amazing prehistoric communities of houses and churches are complex caves carved from the soft limestone rock faces. All members of the family are likely to be amazed by tours of these important artefacts. The local railway station is easily reached on foot or the town can be reached by car from Bari in little more than an hour.
