Introduction to Marsala - Airport
Marsala is a city of some 80,000 people located at the far western end of the Italian island of Sicily. This is an old city with a history going back to about 400BC. The port made it commercially and militarily important and the local salt flats became a great resource, although it is known today primarily for its namesake sweet wine. Hotels at Marsala Airport are ideally located to enjoy the sights of Marsala, as well as the region. Though little of the ancient Carthiginian or Roman buildings remain, bits of the city walls and some buildings can occasionally be spotted. Excellent exhibits can be found at the Biagio Anselmi Archaeological Museum. The centre of the town is less than 30 minutes to the south, and the ornate Church of the Purgatory ought not to be missed. The huge marsh area, in which salt used to be cultivated, is today a large nature reserve a few miles to the south. Trapani, another port city, is 30 minutes to the north, offering ferry services to many regional destinations.
