In 1879, the name of the town of Saline di Barletta was changed to Margherita di Savoia to commemorate Queen Margherita of Savoy, who had an important romance in the town.
Modern visitors are not guaranteed to enjoy quite the same bond with this popular Puglian seaside town but a visit here should provide plenty of enjoyment, nevertheless.
Once vitally important for the mining of salt, the town is today notable primarily for its lovely wide beaches, which can get packed in August.
Salt production continues, though many of the wetland areas have been made into nature reserves.
The biggest of these is the natural saline reserve of Margherita di Savoia, which runs for miles along the coast to the north of town.
As it is a small town, all hotels in Margherita di Savoia offer easy access to the beaches.
The salt museum is in the centre of town and easy to find.
In the last century, nearby natural springs started being used for therapeutic purposes and today several spas can be enjoyed in the town.
