Introduction to Maratea, Italy

Thanks to its enviable location amid breathtaking coastal scenery, the Potenza town of Maratea is often known as the 'Pearl of the Tyrrhenian Coast'. It is the only town in the Basilicata region to enjoy a seaside location. Both locals and tourists staying at hotels in Maratea enjoy access to an incredible variety of natural scenery as well as a huge number of churches and chapels. There are literally dozens of churches here. It's not easy picking the best of the bunch but the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore certainly enjoys a commanding location high above the old town. At night, the old town comes alive with throngs of tourists and shoppers enjoying the Medieval streets, while everything is lit up beautifully and the church offers a fantastic backdrop for holiday snaps. The 20-plus metre high Statue of Christ is one of the main attractions at the top of Mount San Biagio, which offers excellent views of the area as well as great walks. Six defensive watchtowers up to 400 years old are also found in the area.
