Introduction to Loreto, Italy
The hilltop town of Loreto, in Ancona, is home to a popular pilgrimage site for Catholics. Several other towns in Italy and around the world take their names from this community in the Marche region. Sitting about 420 feet above sea level, the town enjoys great views of the Adriatic on one side and the Appenine Mountains on the other. The town is dominated by the impressive Basilica della Santa Casa, which attracts Catholics from around the world. Tradition says the Virgin Mary once lived in a house contained on this site, having been saved from destruction in Nazareth. Massive ramparts, presumably to further protect the saviours of this important house, ring the basilica. Piazza della Madonna sits at the centre of the complex, with the basilica's bright façade filling one end of the square. At the other end is the shrine to the reputed Holy House. In between the two are the college of the Jesuits and the Palazzo Communale. Designed by Bramante, the palace contains an art gallery that houses works by several notable painters. Though it may require some strenuous uphill walking, the area is can be reached on foot from hotels in Loreto.other spellings: loretohotels, lureto otel, loreto hotell, loreto hote, hotle in loreto, loreto hotes
