Introduction to Lodi, Italy
The city of Lodi is the capital of the eponymous Italian province of the same name and is located on the River Adda, in the far north of the country. This beautiful city is full of history and character. Once a Celtic settlement, the city has been subject to fractious regional relationships and military conquest for centuries, the most notable perhaps being a battle the late 18th century that saw young Napoleon Bonaparte establish his military prowess with a defeat of the Austrians. The 17th-century Visconti Castle is a good place to start a tour. Though the castle is almost completely destroyed, the old tower is impressive and relatively easy to find from hotels in Lodi. Piazza della Vittoria, which is northeast of the castle, is considered among the pretties squares in Italy. Pretty porticos topped with all manner of beautiful old houses ring the square. The beautiful Town Hall and the cathedral also sit on this square. Nearby, Tempio Civico della Beata Vergine Incoronata, whose history dates to the 15th century, is considered among the greatest churches from the Lombard Renaissance.
