Introduction to Livigno, Italy
The charming northern Italian town of Livigno lies in the Livigno Range of the Italian Alps, right on the border with Switzerland, and is popular with winter sports enthusiasts as well as summer visitors. At 1,816m above sea level, it's Europe's highest settlement, drawing many weekend bargain shoppers to Livigno hotels from across the border due to its duty-free status. The town's economy is based almost entirely on tourism, aided by its long history and cultural traditions. Three roads lead to the remote little town; two from Switzerland and one from Italy, winding through the spectacular Foscagno Pass. The village is typically Alpine, with stone-built houses and lodges with superb vistas of the surrounding mountains, snow-covered in winter and blooming with flowers in spring and summer. As Livigno serves the ski resort, there is a good choice of accommodation, restaurants, bars and evening entertainment as well as many regular cultural events involving traditional music and performances.
