Lecce is often called the Florence of the South and the wonderfully ornate, if a little crumbled, Lecce hotels are just part of the architectural wonders on offer in this sometimes overlooked tourist drawcard in the south of Italy. Lecce hotels are usually within walking distance of the town square, Piazza S. Oronzo and many offer views of the cathedral with its five storey bell tower. Alternatively, there are more Lecce hotels around the Porta Napoli, marked by an enormous triumphal arch. Lecce boasts a number of ornate but boutique opera and drama theatres and fine restaurants tucked away down cobbled lanes. Many Lecce hotels are in the bed and breakfast category and these are deservedly popular with repeat visitors who often stay with the same family and even nourish friendships with their Italian hosts. Despite all this, Lecce remains just off the peak season radar and so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a room even if you haven’t booked ahead.
