Only an hour or so drive out of Rome is Aquila, a gorgeous university town that has been host to numerous Hollywood film shoots over the years. Aquila is compact and easy to navigate on foot and Aquila hotels all offer easy reach of the town’s top tourist sites like the Forte Spagnolo and the Catherdral of San Massimo. The Church of Saint Bernardino of Siena is one of the many Renaissance buildings in town – a lot have been converted over the years into popular Aquila hotels – to have been severely damaged by the earthquakes that have damaged Aquila repeatedly over many centuries. Aquila hotels offer accommodations in all price ranges and many are bed and breakfast operations run by families sometimes even out of the family home. The Luminous Fountain is a very popular sight with its two enormous women bearing water pouring jugs and the town is also a gay rights pilgrimage due to its host of a grave of an early gay rights pioneer.
