The town of Lanciano, located in the Italian province of Chieti, in the southern region of Abruzzo, is important for a range of historic and religious reasons.
With roots going back some 7,000 years, the town was settled in 1181 BC and conquered by Greeks, Romans, Goths, Lombards, Byzantines and Franks before regaining importance under the Normans.
By the 14th century, it was the biggest city in Abruzzo.
Tradition says the Roman centurion who thrust his lance into the side of a crucified Jesus was born here.
The town is famous for the miracle of the Eucharist, said to have taken place here.
Relics of this miracle are housed in the 13th-century Church of San Francesco.
Some might think the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Ponte more of a miracle.
The 17th century building sits on bridgework built on a precipice.
The incredible mix of architecture found at the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore makes it one of the most significant churches in Abruzzo.
The incredible 15th-century Torri Montanare offer spectacular views.
These sights and others, like the town's last remaining fortified gate, the 11th-century Porta San Biagio, are easily reached from hotels in Lanciano.
