Introduction to Isernia, Italy
Isernia is the capital of the province Isernia in southern Italy. It is delightful to spend the night in Isernia hotels, no matter if you are in the historic city centre with its fascinating, winding narrow lanes and alleyways or closer to the beautiful rolling hills around the town that produce white, red and rose wines. The wines are mostly made with the Montepulciano and Sangiovese grape varieties that grow so well here. The main symbol of Isernia is Fraterna Fountain, which dates to the 13th century and was restored in 1835. Its stones came from ruined Roman monuments and its designs were created by local masters, commissioned by the town's well to do Rampini family. A great daytrip from the capital is to the charming small rural village of Castelromano, which has 500 residents and is set in a plateau at the bottom of Mount La Romana. The village is set at an altitude of 680 metres above sea level, some five kilometres west of town.
