Introduction to Grosseto - Outskirts
Contrary to some reports, the Tuscan town of Grosseto offers plenty of sights for visitors to enjoy. Hotels in Grosseto offer easy access to the historic city core. While in town, don't miss the old city walls. The walls were begun in the 16th century by Francesco I de Medici. Fans of horseracing should head to the Ippodromo Il Casalone. Located just south of Grosseto, the venue regularly hosts races. A bit farther south, along the sea, is the sprawling Maremma natural park. Not only is there plenty of beautiful natural scenery but the park is home to the Abbey of San Rabano. The Church of San Giovanni is a popular attraction in the town's southwest outskirts. Just 20 minutes' drive to the north is the ancient Etruscan town of Rusellae, located in present-day Roselle. Getting here can be a bit of a chore unless you're already travelling through the Maremma region. The closest useful airport is found at Florence, some 85kms away. The railway station is very convenient, however, and has regular services to Rome, Florence and Pisa. It's also a simple matter to drive from the E80 Euroroute, which gives you the option of heading along the coastline or towards the interior.
