Introduction to Florence - Uffizi
One of the Western world’s most famous and oldest art museums is the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, set in a magnificent palace built in the late 16th century for Florentine ruler Cosimo de’ Medici’s city administration. Architecturally, it’s innovative for its time, with its inner courtyard narrow and extremely long, opening out onto the Arno River and creating Europe’s first regularised streetscape. Its magnificent artworks have excited visitors since the Grand Tours of European sights by the elite, wealthy and noble began in the late 18th century. The Uffizi is one of the city’s most popular destinations, with visitors staying in nearby Uffizi hotels queuing for hours to enter. Geniuses of the art world whose works are exhibited include Leonardo da Vinci, Giotto, Titian, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Raphael, Caravaggio, Filippo Lippi, Piero della Francesca and Rembrandt.
