The Medici’s rule was interrupted a couple of times during this period, although they consistently won back control. Under the family’s influence, the city expanded rapidly, coming to control most of the province of Tuscany. Even after the end of Medici rule in 1737, the influence and domination of the area by Florence continued and eventually, in the years from 1865-1871, the city ruled the new kingdom of Italy.
