Introduction to Florence - Outskirts
Florence, Tuscany’s capital, has long been one of the globe’s leading cultural centres, with evidence of its dominance during the Renaissance period still visible in its magnificent architecture and art collections. Known locally as Firenze, every year the city has a continuously larger number of visitors, who enjoy comfortable stays at hotels in Florence. The main attractions, like the Uffizi art gallery, Ponte Vecchio and Santa Maria del Fiore (the Duomo), are within a short walk of each other. The Uffizi houses the masterpiece, the Birth of Venus, by Sandro Boticelli, as well as other world renowned artworks. The Duomo is one of the most visited sites and houses further masterpieces by the likes of Michelangelo, whose statue David stands in the city’s Palazzo Vecchio. The River Arno is crossed by the Ponte Vecchio, the only city bridge to have survived WWII”s destruction.
