Introduction to Florence - Fortezza da Basso
The Fortezza da Basso is an early 16th century fortress complex on the north side of the city of Florence, in central Italy. The fort, dedicated to St John the Baptist, features thick walls which surround the historic Polveriera area and contemporary conference centres such as the Spadolini Pavilion. The latter is used to stage many of Florence’s principal events, including the ever-popular Florence Biennale modern art exhibition. Pristine gardens next to the fort contain several ornate fountains. Fortezza da Basso hotels are an excellent choice for visitors as they are all within one kilometre of the main sites, including Santa Maria Cathedral and Ponte Vecchio bridge. The refectory at the nearby Cenacolo di Sant'Apollonia is now a museum and features a large fresco of the Last Supper. The gallery at the Fine Arts Academy houses the original Michelangelo’s David as well as other fabulous works of art and is on the route to the cathedral. Restaurants and the less formal trattorias around the fortress offer local specialities such as pappardelle fettuccine, pasta infused with roasted garlic. Visit our Florence Travel Guide
