Introduction to Florence - Duomo
The Italian city of Florence (or Firenze) straddles the River Arno in the north central region of Tuscany. The city’s iconic Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, which is referred to by locals as the Duomo, is at the centre of the ancient Renaissance edifices and museums in the old city quarter, on the upper bank of the Arno. The 600-year-old dome that crowns the cathedral is still the biggest of its kind in the world. Inside the massive Duomo, a painting of Dante holding the Divine Comedy is one of many highlights. The San Giovanni Baptistery and the Giotto-designed Bell Tower are adjacent to the Duomo. The baptistery dates from the 11th century and is famed for its bas-relief sculptured bronze doors and ornate interior with a fabulous mosaic ceiling. Visitors selecting Duomo hotels are able to view these marvellous buildings and easily walk to Piazza della Signoria, home of the marble Fountain of Neptune, and Ponte Vecchio. The latter is an old Arno bridge which has mid-rise shops built directly on it.Visit our Florence Travel Guide
