Introduction to Florence - Annunziata
The piazza of Santissima Annunziata, in the heart of the unforgettable city of Florence, hosts the basilica of the same name, known in English as the Basilica of the Most Holy Annunciation. This church originated in the mid-13th century, but the present facade-an imitation of the Brunelleschian facade of the Foundling Hospital on the eastern side of the square-dates to the early 17th century. The Baroque interior has a frescoed ceiling, while the adjoining chapel has frescoed walls. Aside from offering easy access to the basilica, Annunziata hotels provide proximity to Florence's most famed sites, most of which are within walking distance of the square. Santa Maria del Fiore, better known as the Duomo, is just a stone's throw to the southwest. This landmark cathedral offers a further example of Brunelleschi's engineering genius with its huge dome which can be climbed. Crossing the Arno River to the south, and just a short walk from other Florence must-visits, are the Medici Palace and the Uffizi is Ponte Vecchio, the city's oldest surviving bridge.Visit our Florence Travel Guide
