Introduction to Fiuggi, Italy
The city of Fiuggi, located in Italy's Lazio region, offers an interesting combination of communities. The more traditional is the hilltop, Medieval town that sits some 2,500 feet above sea level. A bit closer to the sea sits the spa town of Fiuggi Terme. From hotels in Fiuggi, visitors can enjoy exploring the old streets of the hilltop town's centre. The exhaustion of tourism can then be addressed with the therapeutic effects of the spa waters. At any time of the year, visitors can partake of the waters at Fonte Bonifacio VIII. Only in the summer is the Fonte Anticolana open, however. Both of these sites rest in picturesque parkland. The spa town is relatively modern and home to many restaurants, shops and other modern amenities. In the old town, tourists will enjoy sights such as the ornately decorated 18th-century Palazzo Falconi, which sits in the middle of the ancient town. The Grand Hotel, one of the most impressive of the many big old buildings, is a rather palatial affair and today houses a theatre. In Piazza Piave, a cast-iron fountain dating from 1907 celebrates the town's water sources. The Lake Canterno nature reserve sits immediately to the south of the town.
