Introduction to Elba Island - Capoliveri
The southeast Elba Island community of Capoliveri has stood 167m above sea level, on the same ridge of majestic Mount Calamita, since the Roman era. Guests at Capoliveri hotels are never far from the water as there are no fewer than 16 beaches in this part of Italy's third-largest island. The Italian Navy now occupies Focardo Fortress, originally built by Spanish forces to defend the Gulf of Mola in 1678. The Sanctuary of Madonna delle Grazie, whose distinctive dome is reminiscent of those in Eastern Orthodox churches, dates even further back, to the 16th century. An abandoned cemetery stands next to the Apse of San Michele, which Pope Gregory XI visited in 1376 upon his return to Rome from Avignon. The vineyards around this picturesque Tuscan community have produced good quality wine for centuries. Locals enjoy gathering in the cafés in the community's public square, especially during the weekly Thursday market. other spellings: capoliver otel, capolveri hotell, cepoliveri hote, cappoliveri hotles, capoleveri hotle
