Introduction to Chiusi, Italy
Once one of 12 key Etruscan cities, the Tuscan community of Chiusi is one of Italy's most impressive hilltop history destinations. Wandering these streets provides an incredible taste not of the Medieval or the Renaissance, but of the Etruscan. The history visitors and locals alike get to see, touch, feel and smell here is full-on Etruscan, with a story that goes back to the 7th century BC, when the city was one of the most important and powerful in the area. The best place to start examining this history is at the National Etruscan Archaeology Museum on Via Porsenna. The nearby Romanesque cathedral of San Secondiano dates from the 6th century AD. The cathedral museum has an interesting range of exhibits, but the primary attraction is the chance to take a tour of the Labyrinth of Porsenna, the Etruscan tunnel system beneath the city. This tour also provides a chance to climb the cathedral tower and enjoy great vistas. The countryside around the town is full of Etruscan tombs, though only a few are open to the public and require a car to reach. Visitors with cars can choose one of the Chiusi hotels and check out the ancient Christian catacombs and other local attractions.other spellings: chiusihotels, otelin chiusi, chuisi hotell, hote shuisi, chiusi hotle, chiuci hottell
