Introduction to Chieti, Italy
Church-laden Chieti city is 200kms northeast of Rome in central Italy. Here, it lies on a bluff above the Pescara River, just a few kilometres from the Adriatic Sea. The Gran Sasso and Maiella mountains provide a blissful backdrop. The Cathedral of Chieti, rebuilt in 1069, has a fine bell-tower and a Romanesque crypt. After being damaged in several earthquakes, the structure was refashioned in the 1600s and 1700s in Baroque style. The Church of San Francesco al Corso, which dates to 1239, has a handsome Baroque facade. Chieti also has many museums. The best of these is the National Archaeological Museum of the Abruzzi, also called Villa Frigerii. It contains displays on the pre-Roman Abruzzo culture, the Capestrano Warrior statue and other Italic sculpture, local Roman iconography and a fine numismatic collection. The Costantino Barbella art museum is also worth popping in to. Also holding good collections are the Archaeological Museum and the Diocesan Theatine Museum. Chieti hotels are peppered around town and close to the main sites.other spellings: chieithotels, otelin chitei, cheiti hotell, ciheti hote, hcieti hotes, chiet hotle, chiei
