Introduction to Catanzaro, Italy
The Italian city of Catanzaro, the capital of Calabria, sits a few miles inland from the Ionian Sea in the country's deep south.

Like many communities in the region, the city has a long and eventful history whose legacy is colourfully illustrated by an old city centre.

Unlike other Italian cities, there is no historic centre.

Here, modern buildings are found in among more notable bits of architecture that can be enjoyed from hotels in Catanzaro.

The cathedral, built in the 16th century on the site of a Norman church, has had many features added and lost, most recently during its reconstruction following WWII bombing.

On the town's western flank, the single-arch Ponte Bisantis is among the highest bridges in Europe.

The Basilica of the Immaculate originally dates from 1254 but has been rebuilt several times since then.

The downtown area is overlooked by the Church of San Giovanni, which sits on the highest of the city's three hills.

By wandering the smaller streets, tourists can discover many other attractive and historic churches, such as San Rocco and Santa Maria del Carmine.

Later in the day, the seafront area of Catanzaro Lido offers some great cafes, bars and gelateria (ice cream shops) in which to unwind.
