Introduction to Catania - Caltagirone
With a rich and lengthy heritage of ceramics production stretching back 1,000 years, the town of Caltagirone is a great destination for travellers with an eye for artistic craftsmanship. Located on Sicily, about 70kms southwest of Catania, the town offers a wonderful UNESCO-protected old town where visitors can browse dozens of shops featuring the artistry and craftsmanship of the locals. There is a fair amount of tourism infrastructure in Caltagirone, but not enough to make it feel insincere. The Staircase of Santa Maria del Monte, with its monumental 142 steps, is the main landmark in the hilly old town. Each step is adorned with handmade tile work, creating a truly beautiful scene. Several impressive Renaissance-era churches and cathedrals containing artwork, frescoes and other notable features are on hand and worth checking out. The old town is really the best place to stay, with some excellent Caltagirone hotels to choose from. A car won't be needed here as all of the shops and restaurants are easily reached on foot.
