Introduction to Catania - Aci Trezza
The tranquil Sicilian village of Aci Trezza is situated about 10kms north of the larger community of Catania on the shores of the Ionian Sea. This village, also frequently spelled Acitrezza, has long been a popular summer holiday spot among tourists from other parts of Italy, but Aci Trezza hotels have also greeted growing numbers of guests from other countries in recent years. Aci Trezza may be a small village of just 5,000 people, but it has played an important part in several significant works of literature. The three tall islands off the village coastline are known as the Islands of the Cyclops because they are said to be the stones Polyphemus hurled at Odysseus in Homer's Odyssey. In more recent years, the village was also the setting of I Malavoglia, a novel by Italian writer Giovanni Verga; the village residents played all the parts in a film based on the book in 1948. One of those former cast members now runs a small museum about this film. Another museum is located within the ancient Norman Aci Castle, which overlooks the village on a seaside lava cliff.
