Introduction to Castiglione del Lago, Italy
Castiglione del Lago is a small town in the Italian province of Perugia, in Umbria, and lies on Lake Trasimeno's southwest shores. The town houses a number of archaeological sites which reveal it was populated in both Etruscan and Roman times. Even now, the medieval walls and ancient castle are well preserved, making it an interesting town to visit. This small town experiences many visitors, and Castiglione del Lago hotels are situated throughout the centre as well as on the scenic lakefront. One of the most popular sites to visit is Rocca del Leone, or the Lion Fortress, which is in pentagon form, with four corner towers and the triangular-shaped Mastio. It is one of the greatest examples of medieval architecture in Umbria and dominates the lake area. Palazzo della Corgna is also worth seeing. This palace is connected to the Rocca by a passageway and boasts extensive pictorial interior decoration. Every two years in April or May, Castiglione del Lago hosts the Coloriamo i Cieli (Colour the Skies) festival. The festival includes almost 2,000 light aircraft, thousands of colourful kites and a number of hot air balloons.
