Introduction to Castelvetrano, Italy
The Sicilian town of Castelvetrano, which sits a few kilometres inland from Sicily's northwest coast, enjoys the dubious distinction of being the birthplace of Fascist philosopher Giovanni Gentile. Of vastly greater interest for most people, however, is the ancient archaeological site of Selinunte, which is ranged along the sea, about 12kms south of hotels in Castelvetrano. So far, just one of the five Greek temples at the site has been re-built, but this large area of ruins centred on an acropolis is not to be missed. Though Selinunte is the biggest attraction of the area, the old town of Castelvetrano contains its own share of historic sites. Many of these are located around the delightful Piazza Umberto I. The imposing Mother Church, with its photogenic clock tower, sits at the northern end of the piazza. A few metres away is the very pretty Nymph Fountain. A few kilometres outside the town stands the Church of the Holy Trinity of Delia, an Arab-Norman edifice that was restored in the 19th century.other spellings: castelvetranohotels, castelvetano otel, castelvetrano hotell, castelvetano hote
