Located in the north of Italy, in the Emilia-Romagna region, the town of Carpi is home too much industry as well as plenty of historical and cultural note.
The town square, Piazza Martiri, is some 300 metres long and 150 metres wide, making it the third-largest piazza in the country.
This is truly an impressive site that is well worth seeing by anybody visiting the region and not to be missed by those staying at hotels in Carpi.
The town cathedral, which sits at one end of the square, is a beautiful and ornate 16th-century building with a later Baroque facade.
The Town Hall, or Palazzo dei Pio, is a former castle and contains architectural elements from several periods, including a finely-frescoed chapel.
The city's museum and a museum dedicated to WWII prisoners of war are also housed here.
These and many other impressive buildings are found throughout the historic town centre, which is closed to vehicles and best explored on foot or by bicycle.
Fossoli, five kilometres to the west, still has remains of a WWII prison camp.
The bustling city of Modena is only 30 minutes to the south.
