Introduction to Carovigno, Italy
Offering a great stop along the Adriatic highway from Brindisi, Carovigno has been home to humans since prehistoric times. Many fine ancient villas and fortified buildings testify to the ancient and historical importance of this Puglian port town, where low-lying, old buildings and stubby palms line quiet, wide boulevards. In the years since the ancient quarter of Carbinia was first founded, the city has been sacked by successive waves of invaders, including Byzantines, Normans, Lombards, Swabians and Aragonese. Much of the city's impressive fortifications date from the 14th century, and some older megalithic walls can still be found here. Hotels in Carovigno are within easy reach of the historic city centre, with the main site here being the large, triangular Dentice Frasso Castle. Next door is the Church of St Anne, which dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. Tourists can easily discover a range of churches, each of which offers something unique and colourful. Some three kilometres from the town, the 18th-century Belvedere Sanctuary sits where locals once hid in caves to avoid persecution. About 20 minutes to the east, Serranova is home to another beautiful castle-like villa.
