Introduction to Capri - Marina Grande
Sitting roughly five kilometres from Italy's Campania coast in the Bay of Naples, the legendary island of Capri has attracted tourists for thousands of years. Originally, the breathtaking natural scenery on and around the island, as well as the fresh air, were the main reasons Roman emperors would take holidays here. Today, the natural beauty remains and is bolstered by the extremely picturesque communities spilling forth among the cliffs and hills of the island. Another thing that has improved with time is the transportation. Today, visitors have a choice of high-speed hydrofoil, ferries, water taxis or luxury tours that take in the best of the local coastlines. Driving the island is a bit of a challenge, however, as the roads tend to be narrow and quite dangerous. However you choose to get to Capri, hotels in Marina Grande, in the north of the island, are only a few minutes from the port. Much of the area can be tackled on foot but there is a handy funicular tram that carries passengers up the hill into Capri Town from Marina Grande, which is also the place to catch boats to Capri's famous cave, the Blue Grotto.
