Introduction to Campobasso, Italy
Campobasso is the capital of Campobasso Province in the Molise region of southern Italy. Encircled by the Matese and Sannio mountains, it finds itself in the Biferno River's high basin. Known since the 1300s for the quality of its swords and knives, the region is also home to fine scamorza cheese and pears. The town's main highlight is Castello Monforte, which dates to 1450 and was rebuilt after earthquakes in 1456 and 1805. Near the fortress is the Chiesa della Madonna del Monte, which was constructed in the 1000s. At the foot of Castello Monforte stands the Church of St George, built around the turn of the 11th century atop a ruined Pagan temple. Also making their home in the city is the Archdiocese of Campobasso-Boiano and the University of Molise. St Bartolomeo Church in Campobasso's medieval town centre has a fine bell-tower. The restored Villa de Capoa is a great garden worth strolling through.
