Introduction to Butera, Italy
The hilltop town of Butera, close to Sicily's southeast coast, is a popular destination for both budget travellers and those seeking to relax in luxury resorts amid beautiful countryside. On the fringes of town and from atop tall stone buildings, the town offers impressive views across the lowland below. In the town's interior, visitors enjoy a maze-like array of narrow streets, though the town's narrow, compact size makes it easy to enjoy everything on foot from hotels in Butera. Built on the site of a Byzantine fort, the largely-Norman castle demonstrates an unusual mix of influences. Much like the town, the castle features bits of Arab, Norman, Aragonese, Swabian and other histories. A wonderful seaside archaeological site sits just north of the town. Known as Piano della Fiera, this necropolis saw use centuries before Christ. Piazza Duomo, in the town centre, is home to the Mother Church, which dates from the 16th century. The Church of San Rocco contains a statue of the town's patron saint and is the setting for a colourful festival every year. The town is accessed by road on the SP8, which puts the coastal town of Gela at just 30 minutes away.other spellings: buterahotels, buttera otel, buterra hotell, butera hote, hotlein buttera, buttera
