The port city of Brindisi has played a key role in Italy's maritime activities since the busiest days of the Roman Empire. The most visible evidence of this history may be the column erected to mark the southern end of the great Appian Way, which carried armies and supplies to the harbour, from where they headed to Greece and destinations farther east. Today, the pretty city is a popular destination both for travellers arriving on Italian roads or trains and those using the ferry services linking the town to Albania, Greece and other countries. The port remains one of the busiest in the Adriatic. Brindisi City Centre hotels are close to the scenery and activity of the port as well as the E55 and E90 motorways. This massive complex was founded by Frederick II and expanded over following centuries. Another impressive fortification, Forte a Mare, is located on the sea. Though the city's impressive cathedral is 1,000 years old, it was rebuilt in the 18th century.
