Introduction to Bisceglie, Italy
The pretty seaside port city of Bisceglie, which sits on Puglia's Adriatic coast, offers an interesting and attractive blend of historical and cultural influences. The area has been settled by different groups since prehistoric times. The most visible signs of the region's Paleolithic past can be seen in its ancient tombs, known as dolmens. These striking ancient stone pillars and associated monuments can be seen just a few miles inland, with a big crop of them about 20 minutes' drive to the south. Though there is some Roman history here, the town's history really began with the Normans. The well-preserved fortified walls date from the 11th century. These impressive walls contain an ancient town centre that is well worth exploring and is easy to reach from hotels in Bisceglie. Fans of both history and architecture will enjoy the 12th century Church of Santa Margherita. The city defences were expanded in the 15th century under Aragonese rule from Naples. The Norman castle was later largely redeveloped and expanded by several waves of conquerors. Visitors whose feet are worn out traipsing around this fairytale stone community can enjoy relaxing on the beach, with this fishing port receiving large numbers of sun-seekers. Right in Bisceglie sits one of the world's most important anthropological sites, the grotto of St Croce, which was discovered to contain the femur of a Neanderthal adult in 1955.other spellings: biscegliehotels, biscegle otel, hotellin bisceglie, biscegli hote, biscegrie hotes
