Introduction to Bergamo, Italy
Bergamo, which dates from Roman times, is a town in Italy’s region of Lombardy. Bergamo is located next to the Alps’ foothills 40kms from central Milan. Bergamo comprises two separate parts linked by paths, road and cable-car. The older medieval part is on a hill ringed by 17th century walls. There are some Bergamo hotels in the old quarter. These Bergamo hotels are set in refurbished historic buildings and are close to restaurants and the quarter’s multiple attractions. A few of the sights are the exquisite Colleoni Chapel, the 14th century Citadel, the Piazza Vecchia and the Palazzo della Ragione. There are basilicas, more ornate palaces and museums. In the modern areas of town there are additional Bergamo hotels options. Some of these Bergamo hotels are large structures managed by international hotelier chains. The newer part of town has no ancient buildings but it does have good shopping options on Via 20 Settembre. The A4 motorway, which runs from Turin, passes through the southern part of Bergamo.
