Introduction to Belluno, Italy
The name of northeastern Italy's Belluno town means 'splendid hill', and indeed the settlement has plenty of hills and is an area of great natural beauty. It has about 37,000 residents, making it the most populous town in the area. The Romans founded the city around 200 BC. Scenic sights include the cathedral, which dates from the late 1400s and has a fine 18th-century bell-tower. The spacious Palazzo dei Rettori was made in 1491 and is a great place for watching people come and go. Also worth a look are the Communal Palace, the Bishop's Palace and the Fountain of Piazza del Duomo. The formerly Gothic but now Baroque San Pietro Church, which dates to 1326, features five paintings by Andrea Schiavone. Other terrific religious sites are the 16th-century Church of San Rocco, the Church of Santo Stefano and the Romanesque Church of San Biagio. Meanwhile, the ancient walls at Porta Dojona and Porta Rugo gates are great sites to behold. Belluno hotels are numerous.other spellings: belluonhotels, bellnuo otel, belulno hotell, belluno hote, bliluno hotes, ebluno hotle
