Introduction to Barletta, Italy
Countless battles have been fought in the port city of Barletta, Italy throughout the century because of its important location on the Adriatic Sea. Today, however, this southeast Italian city is a peaceful community whose main industries are cement, concrete, agriculture, and tourism. The city's famous bronze Colossus of Barletta statue which greets guests who stay at Barletta hotels is rumoured to represent Roman emperor Theodosius II. The Normans first constructed the impressive Castello Svevo during the 10th century as a military hostel for Crusades soldiers departing for the Holy Land. Several centuries later, Castello Svevo was used as a WWI barracks and military shop, and later again as a WWII military defence unit. Remainders of a far older battle between Hannibal and ancient Roman soldiers, the Battle of Cannae, have been unearthed at an archaeological site. The 11th century Crusader church of San Giacomo was constructed on the former site of a temple to Isis, a Roman goddess. A temple to Poseidon once stood on the current location of a cathedral called Santa Maria Maggiore.other spellings: barlettahotels, otelin barleta, barlett hotell, barlatta hote, balitta hotle
