Introduction to Barberino Val d’Elsa, Italy
Countless people have passed through the main road leading to the Tuscan town of Barberino Val d'Elsa since the Roman Empire. Today, most guests at Barberino Val d'Elsa hotels are attracted to the town's world famous Chianti Classico wine as well as its fascinating history. Virtually every hill belonging to the town contains at least one chapel, villa, castle or other historic landmark of sort. The oldest church in Barberino Val d'Elsa was built from stone and brick, and is called the parish church of Sant'Appiano. An antiquarian museum attached to the church contains ancient ceramics from the surrounding necropolis in addition to artefacts from the Etruscan era. Another church, named the Chapel of San Michele Arcangelo, was constructed in 1597 where the ancient city of Semifonte once stood. This chapel is a perfect replica of and exactly one-eighth the size of the dome of the cathedral in nearby Florence, just 30kms away.
