Introduction to Baia Domizia, Italy
One of Italy's best known holiday resorts is Baia Domizia, situated approximately halfway between Naples and Rome in a northwest province called Caserta, in the Campania region. The first Baia Domizia hotels in this planned resort opened in 1963, and their numbers have only increased during the decades which have followed. The resort was named after its location on the Domitian coast, and a now extinct volcano called Roccamonfina formed its beach, which is more than a kilometre long and can only be reached through the resort's many footpaths. There are fewer than 1,000 permanent residents in Baia Domizia, and many of them live in traditional Mediterranean style villas surrounded by pine trees and other local plant life. The northern part of the resort is administered by the council of Sessa Aurunca, while another council called Cellole oversees the southern and eastern parts of the resort. The resort is just a small part of the larger Garigliano Natural Park and is known as the gateway to southern Italy because of its location at the border between Latium and Campania.
