Introduction to Aviano, Italy
Many Americans may best know the northeast Italian town of Aviano as the location of one of their country's first military aviation bases. Aviano Air Base may have been an important part of this region, called Friuli-Venezia Giulia for over a century, but the recorded history of the town for which the base is named is older than the Roman Empire. Two towers are the most prominent of the remains of an early 10th century castle which stands on a hill not far from Aviano. Salzburg masters carved the Pieta sculpture inside the 1589 Santa Maria e Giuliana Church, while the paintings which hang on the walls of San Zenone Cathedral were created during the 16th and 17th centuries. Madonna della Monte and St Gregory are other prominent local churches. Some Aviano hotels are actually situated at a nearby ski resort called Piancavallo, which stands at the foot of the 2,250m Monte Cavallo and contains a total of 26kms of cross-country skiing trails and 24kms of alpine ski runs.other spellings: avianohotels, avaino otel, aveano hotell, awiano hote, aviano hotes
