Introduction to Avellino, Italy
The commune and town of Avellino, Italy is the capital of the province of the same name. Mountains surround the plain in which the town is situated, 42kms northeast of Naples in southwest Italy's Campania region. There are a handful of Avellino hotels in addition to several smaller villas for rent. The town began its history as an ancient community called Abellinum before its Roman conquest, and what remains of ancient Abellinum can be seen just four kilometres east of present day Avellino. Although earthquakes and volcanic eruptions have destroyed many historic landmarks over the years, a cathedral with a Romanesque crypt now stands on the former location of a stately Roman villa. Ruins of what was once a Lombard castle remain in a valley location in Piazza Castello. One-third of all Italian chestnuts are produced here, and Taurasi, Aglianico and Greco di Tufo are just three of the rapidly growing number of famous local wines.
