Introduction to Asti, Italy
The city of Asti, Italy is recognised as the unofficial capital of the area of Piedmont, known as Montferrat in English, Monferrato in Italian, and Monfra in the Piedmontese language spoken by many residents of this 'City of 100 Towers'. Despite the nickname, however, there were once up to 120 towers in Asti, and approximately 15 of them still stand within the walls which have surrounded the city since the Roman Empire. The city's old medieval town revolves around Piazza San Secondo, named after its most impressive building, a 13th century church and crypt. The newer Baroque town from the 1700s, however, is centred around another piazza, named after poet and former Asti resident Vittorio Alfieri. Most Asti hotels are located in either of these two historic districts. The mayor's office is housed inside a former palace, while the local synagogue includes a museum dedicated to the city's Jewish community. Visitors can wander around the 1860 Alfieri Theatre, which looks more like an opera house, or watch artists create tapestries inspired by famous paintings at a tapestry museum and workshop. No visit would be complete without sampling the renowned local red and white wines.other spellings: astihotels, assti otel, hotell astie, hote asti, hotesin astio, astiu hotle
