Assisi, a historic town with numerous ancient archaeological delights, is famed as the birth place of St Francis of Assisi. Assisi is located on the lower slopes of Mount Subasio, in the central Italian region of Umbria. The town has a good selection of Assisi hotels. In the centre of the town, near the city’s historic and religious attractions, there are many Assisi hotels housed in refurbished ancient buildings. Assisi hotels are from two to four stars. Assisi’s main tourist destination is the Basilica of St Francis. The basilica consists of two churches, containing mediaeval frescoes, St Francis crypt and the Sacro Convento friary. Piazza Inferiore di San Francesco provides a grand entrance to the basilica. Assisi boasts two castles, the Cathedral of San Rufino and many attractive churches and museums.
