The small agricultural village of Cannara is well off the standard tourist circuit, but travellers with a special connection to St Francis will find its ties to the famous priest intriguing. Cannara, just 10kms to the south of Assisi, is credited as the location of several pivotal St Francis events. Pian d'Arca is where he preached to the birds and Chiesa della Buona Morte is where he instituted the Third Order. Both of these sites are open to the public and receive a small but steady flow of visitors. There are a number of historic churches in the village offering lovely old frescoes and architectural details inside. Few visitors actually stay in Cannara hotels since Assisi is just a short drive away, so the village's amenities are rather thin.
