Introduction to Assisi - Bettona
Travellers searching for the ancient Etruscan roots of Italy should pay the hilltop town of Bettona a visit. Located just 12kms southwest of Assisi in the Umbria region, this charming little hamlet is one of the country's oldest towns and has plenty of interesting architecture and heritage to prove it. The entire town is enclosed by medieval stone walls, many parts dating back to the original Etruscan constructions. At the centre lies the lovely Santa Maria Maggiore church, with its Gothic chapel that remains from the Roman era and some beautiful frescoes inside. Bettona is also notable for its walled gardens that can be admired when walking around the narrow cobblestone streets of the historic centre. Due to its proximity to Assisi, the town sees its fair share of tourists through it rarely feels crowded. Some great dining options are available in the old town section though shopping is not one of the highlights here. The nicest Bettona hotels and inns are located close to the centre of town and provide a convenient base for exploring everything on foot.other spellings: bettonahotel, betona hotell, battona otel, bettone hotles, batona hotle, bettuna hotes
