Ancona is a port city on the Adriatic Coast in central Italy. Ancona is built on the slopes of two hills, which offer natural shelter to the town’s harbour. The harbour walls and the grand Trajan arch at the end of them date from Roman times. The town has numerous accommodation options, including hotels in Ancona, some of which offer views over the enchanting harbour. Harbour front hotels in Ancona are housed in stately period buildings offering a touch of elegance. Ancona hotels standards range from basic hostels to four-star establishments. Ancona’s main tourist attraction is St Ciriaco Cathedral (Duomo), which is located on one of the hills above the city. Ancona also features some majestic churches, numerous examples of Gothic architecture, such as the Palazzo Benincasa, an archaeological museum housing many fine ancient artefacts and the art gallery in Palazzo Bosdari. The art gallery includes a selection of religious paintings. Ancona hotels offer a convenient stopover for traveller’s arriving or departing on the long ferry journeys from Ancona’s port.
