Introduction to Ancona - City Centre
Ranged along a seafront promenade overlooking the Adriatic Sea, Ancona is the popular, historic and picturesque capital of Italy's Marche region. Much of the city's medieval centre was lost during WWII but it still provides plenty to entice visitors. The city's cathedral was established 1,000 years ago and contains a wide variety of artistic and architectural styles. Nearby, the tall marble Arch of Trajan is one of several such arches built across the Roman Empire. On the city's northern frontier, the ferry port provides sea links to many regional destinations in Italy and nearby countries. The city has several railway stations but the central station, located by the harbour, is both the easiest to reach and has the most services.
